Instruments Of The Orchestra Online Music Activities

A member of our Fun Music Company Community recently introduced us to this very cool website link put together by the team at DSO Kids.
When you first get there, it simply looks like a list of instrument links, but press on individual links and you’ll get;
- information about the instrument you’re interested in
- a real orchestral sample sound which you could play to your students in your classroom or studio
- an excerpt of the instrument playing with the whole orchestra.
The recordings are all very high quality , are short and best of all…are free! I think this site is perfect for helping to teach about the Instruments Of The Orchestra.
How do you best demonstrate orchestral listening examples to your students in your classroom or studio? Do you use Cd’s, play a real instrument or would you rather use a website such as this one? Share your experiences with the Music Teaching community. We want to hear from you!

Recordings are good because even a teacher with modest musical training can present coherent information.
With my young violin students, we finish each class with a little ear training, and a short performance from the teacher. Not everyone can do this.
I teach Piano to children (from 4 1/2) all the way up to adult!
And I LOVE the DSOkids instruments website. I’ve used it often and would recommend it to any teacher who has access to the internet during their classes.
I’m also excited by the resources I see here, but I’d like to print some materials first to test out on my students before “buying” the modules. (I’ve signed up with my email address.)
Particularly of interest to me are the worksheets available to young children. It’s almost impossible to find suitable material for 4 year olds!

when you sign in here, you’ll get access to 12 worksheets to use with your younger students, but there’s 46 general theory worksheets on this page all together for you to try out with a range of different ages.

I teach general music to children in grades Kindergarten through 5th. In 5th grade, we do a whole orchestra unit. I use worksheets and recordings from Benjamin Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. These worksheets and recordings guide students through the history of the orchestra along with information about each instrument in the orchestra.
Another great site I like to use is the New York Philharmonics Kidzone page. Students have the opportunity to play games to familiarize themselves with instruments, composers, and even learning how to compose music. Specific information can also be found about the current performers and conductor of the New York Philharmonic. It’s a great site for kids of all ages!
